-.Random bits about me.-
I am Jesús Guerrero and I live in Spain.
I studied informatic engineering in the Córdoba University. I live in Lucena, a small city in the province of Córdoba. I knew about Linux and open source before that, from magazines and such things, however it wasn't until I was on the University when I started to actually develop a real interest in Linux as the great and mighty OS that it is. I was taught using many different Linux based OS, and several commercial Unix clones as well.
I have used many dozens of different Linux distributions over the years. The first Linux that I used seriously was probably an old version of SuSE, that I can't even remember. I used it in the college to develop in Java (language that I've come to hate nowadays, but that's another story). After that, I've used lots of distributions, and finally settled in Debian for a long time. By that time I was using dial-up, which was the only thing that was available around here.
One day, someone told me about Gentoo, and it was love at first sight. I use it since 2004 and I am really happy with it. I've contributed as I could, based on my skills and available time. Recently, I've become a Gentoo Forum Staffer. Great forums, by the way.
I really love the concept of free software, but I am not an MS hater, each one can do as s/he pleases, as long as they don't impose anything on me. Besides that, and in the line of the Nietzsche's book On the genealogy of Morals, I think that Linux is a good OS, not in opposition to the evil M$ or something like that, but based on its own strengths.
I also like music, as long as it's not the top ten of the moment :p My tastes range from P. I. Tchaikovsky and J. S. Bach to Metallica (pre-Load era), Smashing Pumpkins, Paco de Lucía or Massive Attack. I really love jazz, both classical and progressive, and even though I am a guitarist, I enjoy virtuous bassists as well, like Jaco Pastorius (well, we won't see him again I guess), Marcus Miller, Stanley Clarke, Victor Wooten or Abraham Laboriel. There are many more, but I don't want to bore you with my stories.
I am an amateur guitarist, and have played on several bands since I was sixteen or so, don't really remember. Right now, I play on a band named Yobonobo, it could be classified as rock and roll, though there's a lot of mixed styles in there, bits of jazz, pop, punk rock and some other things that are not easy to catalogue. I am not much into labels, anyway. My buddies have played in lots of bands of very different styles, and even though most tracks are created by the one who writes these lines, everyone puts his own stains into the mix. You can hear us in the Yobonobo web site, all the songs we've recorded up to this date can be downloaded for free, and are covered under a Creative commons license. More details on the Yobonobo web site.
-.Some -random- things that I dislike.-
- People that can't stand a different opinion, if you are that way, please, stop reading now. It will be better for you.
- Bull-fighting, don't get me wrong. If I had to kill a bull to eat, I would be the first to do so, but torturing an animal just for the joy of doing so, or because it's the tradition, or because "it was born with such fate" (yes, I've heard that) is a sick mentality, and people which show such little respect for other live beings should be lobotomized and tied to a chair for the rest of their lives.
- Death sentences, under any form.
- The SGAE, for criminalizing everyone and imposing a canon/tax to everything that can virtually be used to store, transcribe or handle music. You guys are the true pirates. I use Cd's for legal purposes, I need them for my work, and I shouldn't be paying your jubilation plans for doing so. I hope you all realize that this is not the way to go before the extinction of the humankind. For those that don't know, the SGAE is a Spanish society that is supposed to look after the rights of authors and artists in general. However, all they do is to imposed taxes on material that has nothing to do with their activities. Right now, they are taxing every single CD you buy, just in case you use it on an illegal manner. That's like taxing knives, just in case you use them to assassinate all the directives of the SGAE. So, you are judged and damned before you have the chance to commit the crime. Kind of remind me of Minority Report, a film I dislike by the way.
- The left, the right, the middle, politics in general, the art of talking a lot without saying anything at all. Faerie tales often have much realist backgrounds.
- Iron maiden, Mago de Oz and Camela, or by that means, any heavy metal band that takes inspiration from medial fantasy, Lord of the Rings or any similar thing. I also dislike Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, in case you were trying to figure.
- Steve Vai, because to me it sound like a SuperNintendo. I can't deny his skills, but I prefer Satriani, which at least uses some feeling.
- The bagpipe, probably the worse sounding musical instrument for my taste. No disrespect intended to bagpipe players. There are lots of virtuous players in Galicia (Spain) and Scotland (and probably in many more places).
- Western films and romantic comedies, specially when Ang Lee and/or Hugh Grant are involved.
- The people who mind everyone else's business, get a life, and don't worry if the neighbor is white, pink, black, gay, short, idiot, fat, Buddhist or pianist. Really, get a life. If you can't get a life, enjoy tv brain-washers and leave everyone else be happy.
- Monarchy, just because you are born with a given surname you shouldn't get any privileges. That was ok for the medieval age, but nowadays I can't think of a reason why I must pay my taxes so they can live in a palace. Humans should be able to choose their leaders. Family rights are a crime against democracy. Nothing personal against the individual, though.
- Censorship under any circumstance. Never, never, never.
- People who honk the horn just for the joy of doing so, moron! that will not speed up the traffic flow. You should all get fined once for each time you uselessly press that silly button.
- Exacerbated patriotism, your country is not better than any other, I have nothing against those who feel some love or whatever for their land, however I feel absolutely no sympathy for those that believe that their country is utterly superior to the rest of the planet. Even the dumbest person in the planet can teach you something, and even the poorest country in the world has something to offer. Stop watching the Fox news, and do some research yourself ;)
